February 3, 2010Initials for my gansey |
|
At a time when the loss of a boat was a frequent occurrence, deliberate mistakes or the wearer’s initials were often incorporated into the design in order to help to identify a body recovered from the sea. (Flamborough Marine)
My week in Liverpool was utterly exhausting, a state not improved by the four-and-a-half hour drive home through an almost constant roadwork-induced 50 mph speed limit (though I can only assume that our humble british road workers have miraculously stumbled upon the art of invisibility, because there was not a single one in sight).
Somewhere in between schmoozing councillors, though, eating my weight in sea-food and drinking far, far too much wine, I did manage to complete the welt of my gansey. The past few days, then, in between naps and wii-based Animal Crossing (my name’s Catherine and I’m an Animal Crossing addict) I’ve been studiously charting my initials, which I’ve posted above. Not that the grisly remains of my body will ever need to be identified after being recovered from the North Sea – touch wood – but I do like that personal “yes I really did hand knit it” touch.
